Maybe it was because I had just stumbled out of Mantra having enjoyed their Sunday buffet complete with vast quantities of free-flow wine; but I didn’t enjoy this year’s bed race as much as in previous years.
The first problem was a reduction in the number and inventiveness of the beds. With one or two exceptions, they were mainly simple carts bedecked with advertising. The second problem was the timetable. In previous years there were a few speeches and then the race took place. This year there was a parade. then a drinking competition, and finally the race took place eighty minutes after the starting time of the event. And finally the race itself. It used to head down Beach Road and then return down second road to the star line; which meant a photographer with a degree of energy could catch the event in two places. This year it headed off down Beach Road, but never came back; I believe it ended in Walking Street. Not so great, or maybe it was my mild state of inebriation.
Talking of which, the drinking competition was a fine, socially aware, event where the first round required all the contestants to drink two beers. Barry Upton decided he could drink two at once:

Then he discovered he couldn’t:

There was also a round for the ladies:

Between rounds, there was some singing; these girls were rather good:

Some people and beds from the afternoon, starting with another shot of the lady I featured yesterday:

2014-01-27| Spike saysNever had a liquidised food only regime; just a focus on vegetables and fruit. No meat at Mantra; just piles of fresh food (oysters are technically vegetables). As for the wine; well one has to relax from time to time….
