Lion and lines

Viharn Sien, Pattaya Leica 0

I have been to Viharn Sien many. many times and snapped away at almost everything more than once. But being there with a camera loaded with black & white film, with therefore a limited number of shots available, encouraged me to really consider shapes and designs more than I have in the past. Of course I could do this with my digital camera; but knowing you only have black & white and a film that you will have to pay to have processed; well, it tends to concentrate the mind.

This image had the relative complexity of the lion set in front of the hint of an arch on the left, and then opening out into straight lines on the right which are broken by the inset of the wall. The dark areas left and bottom, together with the line at the top, perform a degree of framing and accentuate the right hand side opening out, helped by the 3x2 ratio of film. I shot slightly wider so I had room to perform horizontal and vertical corrections in Lightroom to line everything up.

Which is a load of wank to explain why I rather like this photo.

That made me think of my old boss who said once to me “You young programmers do not think anymore before making code …. in the old days it took a few hours to compile the code” …. and that goes indeed for digital photography also … snap, snap, snap …. my wife even keeps them all on her phone or camera.

This was a difficult shot to take with limited shots.
